A combination of art, handicraft and industry…

This is the history of an experiment out of paper that ended up in the MoMa in New York. Normann Copenhagen presents “Kontur”, the unique Vase by Mette Kargo Hvid.

Mette sat one day at her final paper and folded the stripe, inspired by the ornamentation of textile-works. Out of this paper experiment emerged a pattern with a simple, flexible form. When she positioned the paper stripes vertically and looked at her creation, the idea for Kontur was born.

Kontur emerged in the tension field between traditional art-handicraft and modern forms – out of norm-breaking materials.

Mette Kargo Hviv: ”Kontur has its origin in my experience as textiles designer and it is the expression of the idea of a simple and flexible vase that found its inspiration in the light ornament of points. I find it interesting to use my textiles experience in other areas and at the same time think about the manifold and the potential of old handicraft traditions. Kontur is made out of silicone rubber, as the material – not regarding that it also is an alternative to ceramic – offers a surprisingly soft grip to the form and a simple, informal character.”

With its soft and flexible material Kontur surprises the senses and does always ensure a special experience when it is used. Kontur is the history of an experiment that became a vase. It is a piece of artistic handicraft that has been created “with the hands” and with a range of unique characteristics that do excellently suit for the industrial production.

Kontur is exposed in the Museums of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York, Korea and Japan.
