The Finnish designer and Architect Alvar Aalto designed the bar stool 64 in the year 1933 for the Teatro Corso in Zurich. The object is a classic and world-wide known for its timeless appearance and for its high recognition value.
The bar stool 64 is a higher version of the 60 stool and the typical organic L-form from Aalto is seen in both. The bar stool consists of bended, massive and white lacquered birch wood. On request the stool’s seat is available in laminate or linoleum, as well as upholstered with cloth or leather.
Initially the stool impressed because of the bend-technique that was used at its manufacture, for this production, a piece of massive birch veneer is cut in the fiber direction building a fan. Small plywood pieces are then glued to make the bounding easier when the wood it is heated, after this procedure the wood becomes to be unsurpassedly stabile.
The metal ring that was used in its origin to keep the four stool-legs together was designed by Alvar Aalto’s wife, Aino, being replaced by a fitting birch wood ring at the today’s version. The bar stool 64 has a 70 cm height and a 41,7 cm diameter.
