For the furnishing of his „Pavillon de l’esprit nouveau“ on the exposition „L’art decorative d’aujourd’ hui! 1925 in Paris, Le Corbusier designed, beside his famous cabinet furniture “casiers standards”, also a globe.
The appearance of the original globe could only be seen on contemporaneous images of the Pavilion; a nearly identical specimen has been produced by Le Corbusier for his friend Marcel Levaillant in the same year, this one is in a private collection in Switzerland today, and it served as example for the reconstruction of the globe from Alfred Ruegg (1988).
The Pavilion specimen has an inclined axis of earth, what maybe caused construction instabilities.
The Marcel Levaillant globe’s construction has been changed by Le Corbusier so that the axis of earth was vertically produced, avoiding the necessity of further metal supports.
The Le Corbusier globe is a modern translation of the middle age-known wooden frame into a modern metal construction. For the globe, a contemporaneous version is used today that consists of plastic and resists harder light influence, contrasting the original (out of printed paper).
Also further versions of the globe are available, such as printed in French, Italian or Spanish, as well as models with an inclined axis of earth (23.5°).
Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, who chose to be known as Le Corbusier (October 6, 1887 – August 27, 1965), was a Swiss-French architect, designer, urbanist, writer and also painter, who is famous for being one of the pioneers of what now is called Modern Designer Le Corbusier
