The Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany was donated by the Federal Minister for Economics as the official design award of the Federal Republic of Germany. Responsibility for organizing and presenting the prize rests with the German Design Council. The Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany is awarded for supreme achievements in the field of product design (series products of all sectors) and communication design (analogue and digital media). The judging criteria include creative and technical innovation, design strategy, utility, human benefits and sustainability.
Companies cannot enter for the Design Award; instead, they are nominated by the Ministries and Senators for Trade & Industry of the German States or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. It is a precondition for this, however, that a product has already been awarded a national or international prize. No other Design Award sets its entrants such a strict criterion. Because of this the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is called the "prize of prizes" by many opinion leaders in the world of design.
An international renowned, independent jury honors the most outstanding products (maximum 5) with the design award in gold. Furthermore, several other products (maximum 20) have to chance to win a design award in silver.
The design award of the Federal republic of Germany is one of the most worldwide renowned design prices.
