Alexander Girard Description

Alexander Girard, born 1907 in New York City, counts to the most embossing representatives of the American post-war design together with George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames which were close friends of him.

The focus of his versatile work was the textiles design: as leader of the textiles department of the “Hermann Miller Company”, Girard designed numerous textiles that mirror his enthusiasm for vivid colours and patterns. Thereby he preferred abstract and geometric forms, using them in many and mostly euphoric colour constellations.

His furniture pieces haven’t lost any of their actuality and many of them are still available. Girard, who originally studied architecture, often worked as furniture, graph, exposition and interior designer along his career.

He fanatically collected textiles out of all countries on his wide travels, using them as inspiration source. In his last year of life, 1993, he gave them all to the collection of the Vitra collection, together with his studio (hundreds of drawings, prototypes and patterns).
