The trained architect and designer Antonio Citterio was born in Meda in Italy in 1950. He studied architecture in Milan, Italy, and, in 1972, set up a joint industrial design studio with Paolo Nava.
In the early 1980s, Antonio Citterio began his career in architecture and interior design. Between 1987 and 1996, Citterio frequently worked with Terry Dwan. Together they realised architectural projects in Europe and Japan. Works from this period include the B&B Italia showroom in Milan, designed in 1982, and the Esprit stores in Milan, Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Antwerp in Belgium (1985). In 1987, Antonio Citterio received his first Compasso d'Oro, followed by a second in 1994.
In 1999, Antonio Citterio founded "Antonio Citterio and Partners" with Patricia Viel. The studio works across disciplines in architecture, industrial design and graphic design.
Although Antonio Citterio trained as an architect, product design was always his second passion, and he has been equally successful in it. His partners and clients include major international brands such as B&B Italia, Flexform, Flos, Fusital, Guzzini, Iittala, Inda, Kartell, Maxalto, Sanitec Group – Pozzi Ginori and Vitra. Together with Glen Oliver Löw, Citterio developed the Citterio 98 cutlery and the complete Collective Tools series for Iittala. The series has received several important design awards, such as the Red Dot and the iF Design Award.
In May 2000, the new "Antonio Citterio and Partners" offices opened in Milan and in Hamburg in Germany. Numerous architectural projects followed shortly afterwards. From 2003 to 2004, "Citterio and Partners" handled a corporate image project for De Beers, followed by restorations and other architectural projects in Italy, Switzerland and Japan.
Antonio Citterio and his studio take part in a large number of international competitions. As a result, you will find the Citterio name in Hamburg's new HafenCity district, at the German School in Milan, in Marina di Ravenna in Italy and in many other places around the world.
Since 2006, Antonio Citterio has taught at the Accademia di Architettura of the Università della Svizzera italiana, and in 2007 he became a member of the Italian Design Council. In the same year, the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce in London, UK, awarded him the title "Royal Designer for Industry".
