The cutlery pattern Caravel that has been designed by Henning Koppel in 1957 won numerous prizes, including the prestigious Golden Spoon (1963). Thereby the jury praised Caravel because of its brilliant functionalistic expression, its style and the understanding for silver. The pattern Caravel is typical Koppel because of its simple, flat and easy style and the characteristic organic approach to form.
Henning Koppel (1918 – 1981) has been trained to be a sculptor and began his cooperation with Georg Jensen in 1946. His sculptural and organic approaches embodied the new directions in the Scandinavian design of the post war time. Many of his empty-body objects with their high gloss polished surfaces and curved forms are adored as masterpieces of the modern times.
