New Year’s Eve in other countries
Denmark
The New Year’s Eve is called “nytårsaften” in Denmark, whereas the real day is also named new year’s eve-day “nytårsaftensdag”.
Most of the Danish people celebrate New Year’s Eve with friends or relatives. They often meet around 17:30 O’clock for a starting drink. At 18 O’clock the New Year’s speech from queen Margrethe II occurs. The speech is about what happened along the past year inside of the Danish country as well as in the royal family.
There is no typical Danish meal, but they often serve cod, fondue or raclette. While they have the dinner, several table bombs are “kindled”.
At 23:45 O’clock, Dinner for One is shown on television and when there are only 60 seconds left for midnight, the Copenhagen clock is faded in. When the clock comes to 12, the new year’s change is done and everyone toasts with sparkling wine or champagne. Shortly after that the fireworks begin.
Children (and sometimes grownups) wear funny huts and make new year’s jokes.
United States
In the United States the New Year’s Eve is an important social event that implements a whole lot of tourism in metropolis like New York City and Las Vegas, where enormous parties are celebrated in a large scale. One highlight, that also plays a huge role in the media, is the every year “Ball Dropping” ritual in which the Time Square Ball in Manhattan, a large lighted crystal ball, is lowered slowly from the top of the One Time Square building until it reaches the street at midnight. Similar events are celebrated in many other cities. The most popular song that is sung at many official events, like also New Year’s Eve, is the Auld Lang Syne.
Also many religious communities come together at New Year’s Eve to encounter the year’s change at a “night watch” where they express they gratefulness for the past year and pray for a good new year. This is a special tradition in the Afro-American community.
The local fire brigade organizes a central fire work inside of the cities. The individual lighting of fireworks is forbidden in many states. It is also illegal to spark in the air with firearms at midnight like it is traditionally been done in many parts of the country. Much more important than the New Year’s Eve fireworks are the traditional Independence Day fireworks in the USA.
