Louis Poulsen - OJ Lamp Series

Description of Louis Poulsen - OJ Lamp Series

With the OJ lamp series the lamp topic was reinterpreted by the Danish designer Ole Jensen in cooperation with Louis Poulsen. The result: not only a lamp, but three: a table-, a wall-, and a floor-lamp. To guard the simplicity they gave the same name to all three; the abbreviation of the designer Ole Jensen.

“The simplicity is a prerequisite to the detail focalising…” This quotation exactly describes the process that Ole Jensen and Louis Poulsen have run through. Uncountable meetings and designs were the beginning of the long way until the presentation of the conclusion.

The OJ lamp family is characterized by its emphasis on the factual form-speaking, that reminds a little of a pictogram, it is directly known what it is about. From the first designs from Ole Jensen in plaster and burlaps, until the finished lamp consisting of steel, many thoughts flew into the process. It was absolutely important not to change the voluminous screen. It captures the light like a conventional beehive so that it can escape through the openings.

The voluminous screen from the OJ floor lamp captures the light to lead it through the opening. The light is pressed outside by a slightly comprised form at the screen opening at the surface and at the bottom, but never leaving the screen completely. The light surrounds the screen and it is transformed into soft with the fine eggshell structure of the surface. The surface captures the light eliminating the limit between the screen and the room.

The common ground form-speaking from the OJ lamps clearly gets to the foreground, but every lamp possesses characteristic details. A design-trio with clear individuality: “we finally are different too”, is what Ole Jensen explains. The white colour was chosen because of the energy saving lamps. This nuance offers a warm and soft tone to the light.

Ole Jensen formulates his posture to the light theme like this: “light has to be soft and pleasant.” In front of the background of the lightning philosophy from Louis Poulsen the OJ lamp familyis a great example for how factual and clear design can be. While it would be wrong to think that the process was easy – ti was just the opposite. Energy saving lamps don’t have a focus, to that they lead the light in every direction. This means that many tries had to be made with different angles for the screen and the height of the illuminants before the prototype could be manufactured.

The OJ floor lamp doesn’t prerequisite specific furnishings. It harmonizes with the newest design trends, but also with the classic environment. The aesthetical-puristic design suits every frame, whereas the white colour gives certain anonymity to the room; switched on and off the individual design marks of the lamp come forward.
