Rosendahl - Kay Bojesen Wooden Creatures

Description of Rosendahl - Kay Bojesen Wooden Creatures

The famous Wooden Creatures were shaped by the designer Kay Bojesen between the years 1935 and 1957. The Danish company Rosendahl produces the collection today in close cooperation with Kay Bojesen’s family. The Wooden Cretures are placed in the unique border area between fantasy figure and design object. Full of soul, humour, handicraft and with a Schalk in the eye – and thereby an apple to the playful kid in all of us.

In Kay Bojesen’s naïve designs, form and object, seriousness and game melt to a unity. At the same time Bojesen possesses the inimitable characteristic of waking wood to life, what made his works international design icons. The newspaper Wallpaper even called the wooden apes from Kay Bojesen the “embodiment of the Danish design” 2008.

But not only in the children’s room, but also in shelves and offices, the Wooden Creatures from Kay Bojesen are now desirable collection objects that are handed from generation to generation, everywhere where life and game are: baptism, birthday, confirmation, graduations, marriage, anniversary.

Bojesen himself has rendered homage to his thought that great design should be human, warm and vivid, during his life: ”They should remind of a circus”, is what he used to say about his works, from which his Wooden Creatures count to the most popular ones.

Kay Bojesen counts to the greatest Danish functionalists with his user friendly and modern form-speaking. In his naïve designs, form and function, seriousness and game melt to a unity. At the same time Bojesen possesses an inimitable characteristic of waking wood to life, what made his works international design icons.

To the Kay Bojesen Wooden Creatures count the ape, bear, elephant, rabbit, rhino and sausage dog.
