The name of the project reveals it all: Alessi goes China! And the truth is, Alessi presents a utile item with Asian design philosophy with the Trayscape tray.
Trayscape looks like a table sculpture, empty, expecting something that is to come. A dark stone, modelled like a sea, which is surrounded by soft mountains, like a traditional Chinese garden. Turned inside out, to be used as tray, the reliefs of the landscape become the surfaces on the table – and the slightly arched, flat surface, which served as base before, becomes the place for tasty meals.
Both opposite souls of “Trayscape” – the contemplative expectation of an empty object and the functionality of the tray – are only understandable separately; they exclude each other.
Liu Xiaodu, Meng Yan, Wang Hui of the design studio Urbanis designed a tray, which connects Asian philosophy with everyday objects with their Trayscape they designed for the Officina Alessi collection. The tray is made out of melamine resin.
