Description

Plastic fantastic: Kartell isn’t considered the hometown of plastic culture for nothing. Its founder was the chemistry engineer Giulio Castelli, who saw unknown possibilities in the then still young material polypropylene in 1949 – and who found a congenial designer for his visions in Gino Colombini.

Kartell also became an internationally known name since the Pop-wave. The company constantly worked together with the most talented designers, from Joe Colombo and Kartell’s art directress Anna Castelli Ferrieri with legendary creations in the 1960s up to younger hits such as Philippe Starck’s Louis Ghost chair or the table lamp Cindy by Ferrucio Laviani. Kartell re-invented the industrial material plastic once more: as independent, exciting design material.

Uncountable pictures out of the company’s archives mirror Kartell’s history, decade after decade, starting in post war periods with household tools up to the technologic successes of the following decades. The Elisa Storace and Hans Werner Holzwarth edited images-book is fulfilled with historic and current product images, prototype-unique specimen out of the company museum as well as original publicities of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s by means of essays by design experts and dialogues with Claudio Luti, who owns Kartell since more than twenty years now and who is the architect of the astonishing global expansion of the brand.
