German design with an unmistakable reputation
In terms of quality, durability and simplicity of form, German design has a distinctive reputation. Behind serially manufactured products, such as tubular steel furniture from the Bauhaus period, the VW Beetle, the BRAUN stereo systems or Bulthaup kitchens hide passionate designers whose names are often unknown, but who are committed to the technical innovation and a design language for the future.
The DVD Faszination Form Farbe - Design aus Deutschland (fascination shape colour - design from Germany) by absolut Medien was directed by Maren Niemeyer and Sissi Hüetlin and deals, divided in three parts with this phenomenon. They did some research in Tokyo, New York and Milan and asked why "Design made in Germany «is so demanded.
The first episode deals with product design: Here, the audience gets an overview of the highlights of the last few decades; also, the audience is given insights into current designs and production processes and various successful German designers - including Stefan Diez and Richard Sapper - are portrayed.
The second episode is devoted to the topic of fashion design. The episode shows how the city of Berlin has developed from its fashionable sleeping beauty sleep to the capital of design. Furthermore, several fashion experts and designers get introduced, including Jörg Wichmann, who runs the designer shop Berlinomat in Berlin, as well as the founder of the fashion label Strenesse, Gabriele Strehle and the minimalist modern fashion designer Ayzit Bostan.
In the third episode, it comes to the latest and most abstract field of design- the communication design. It is considered one of the most important design arts of the future, for without a well crafted brand image - the so-called “branding” – today no company can assert itself successfully in the global world market anymore. The meaning of communication design is demonstrated with very practical examples. Further there is some research done in Japan to find out about how to communicate the value of a German brand in the world successfully.
