Rival is the result of the first collaboration between Finnish design company Artek and German design star Konstantin Grcic. A universal chair for the office, home or public spaces.
With its birch wood design, Rival combines quintessential Artek design and simultaneously offers a fresh reinterpretation of the classic wooden chair. The chair legs as well as arm and backrests are made from solid varnished birch wood, while the seat is made from plastic.
What at first glance seems like a normal wooden chair, actually can effortlessly keep up with office chairs in terms of functionality and comfort. In the curve-out for the seat, under the cushion, there’s an intelligent ‘knot’ hiding - a mechanism that gives the Rival its rotation function. In addition to convenience and flexibility, this finesse is also a reference to the intuitive use of the chair.
The low back rest of the KG001 characterises open space and supports to precisely the extent necessary for active and flexible sitting.
The name Rival doesn’t represent rivalry, instead self-confidence. It describes the powerful history of Artek and Alvar Aalto. It doesn’t look back, but proudly says: ‘This is how furniture is made today.’ Konstantin Grcic
The Rival Chair is available with legs and backrest made from birch wood with transparent or coloured varnish, as well as with a plastic seat made from polypropylene in different colours. You can choose a cushion with a leather or 3D knit cover.
In addition to the KG001 with low backrest, the Rival KG002 edition with a high backrest is also available.
