Birch plywood stool with long tubular steel legs

Lukki means "father long leg" in Finnish, which playfully takes up the unmistakable look of the Lukki stool by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Artek. The frame of the stool is made of tubular steel, while the seat is made of pressed birch plywood. The result is a light, versatile and distinctive piece of furniture. Lukki replaces solid wood with tubular steel frames and plywood elements and combines strength, durability and versatility with unmistakable aesthetics. In the 1950s Ilmari Tapiovaara designed the Lukki series for the student hostels of the Helsinki University of Technology.

In the late 1940s, Ilmari Tapiovaara took part in a competition to design furniture for the student residence complex at Helsinki University of Technology. This was the beginning of a long period in which Tapiovaara explored the combination of tubular steel with wood and textiles. Tapiovaara took part in the competition with his design for the Lukki Chair. He not only won, but also formed the basis for the iconic and very popular Lukki series.
