In 1968 - or a year after the design of the Pastil Chair - the Finnish designer Eero Aarnio received the American Industrial Award. He provided a detailed explanation of how he developed the idea that brought him the Industrial Design Award. Here he refers to another of his award-winning designs - the Ball Chair of 1966.

"In this case the idea behind the Ball Chair was that a lot of empty, padded room will be sent around the world. A new round Chair would fit into it, and so the diameter of the Pastil Chair is exactly as big as the opening of the ball Chair. I've made the first prototype of polystyrene, so I could test dimensions, the ergonomic fit and its rocking movements.
Because fibreglass is layered by hand on a smooth form, the visible surface is always completely shiny, the other side, however, always a bit rough. I always tried to hide this page on my fibreglass products. Ideally it is on the inside of the Pastil Chair and so completely invisible."

The Pastil Chair is an asset, not only due to its comfortable shape for eye and body, but also by the special pastel-like colours, which makes this design a completely rounded design.
The New York Times wrote about the Ball Chair and Pastil Chair as simply "the most comfortable chair in the world".
