The drinking glasses of the Ultima Thule series were designed in 1968 by Tapio Wirkkala. Today, Iittala's classic glasses are real witnesses of their era.
Ultima Thule is a collection of glasses that show the long and hard work involved in the perfection of glass working technique. The unique effect of the glasses and their appearance imitate nature: Tapio Wirkkala was inspired by the design of the ice melting glacier in Lapland. Hence the name Ultima Thule, because this is the name of the northernmost land point of the world.
Today, Ultima Thule drinking glasses are considered classics. The series played a major role in Iittala's international breakthrough. The finely crafted collection shows the distinct power of Finnish glass work. The shapes of Iittala glasses vary from piece to piece, depending on how the liquid glass surrounds the wooden models during production.
