Multifunctional Cutlery Set
With his design for the Model 29, Hans Schwippert broke with all traditional preconceptions of cutlery design and composition. Each part can be used in multiple ways.
The fork is a table, steak, meat, sausage and serving fork in one.
The knife is not only a table knife, but is also great as a steak or pizza knife, or as a cheese knife, as the tip can prick into cheese very nicely to move it where it needs to go.
The spoon is a tablespoon, soup spoon and serving spoon in one and together with the spoon knife forms the salad cutlery. And together with the fork makes the serving cutlery.
The small spoon with teeth isn’t just a coffee spoon, but also a cake fork, ice cream spoon, fruit spoon and sugar scoop.
If you think that industrial design, like modern industrial society in general, is characterised by specialisation, then the synthesis provided by Hans Schwippert with Model 29 appears like a solid utopia. It includes a hope for less equipment, more space and less rubbish.
