Lamps designer Poul Henningsen would have celebrated his 120th birthday on the 9th of September of 2014. In order to celebrate this, the Danish design legend PH 3 ½ - 3 by Louis Poulsen is re-edited as special piece in a limited series.
The 3 2/1 – 3 pendant lamp is the re-introduction of one of the first products in Poul Henningsen’s famous PF-system, which is based on the 3-shades principle. The pendant lamp was already designed by the Danish in 1929, and its details were already focussed in that time: The PH 3 ½ - 3 lamp is also characterized by being equipped with screw adjustments. The top shade has the rolled edge which makes it look thicker than the material really is, and also represents the method, which is still done by hand at Louis Poulsen.
The detailed socket of the Louis Poulsen PH 3 ½ - 3 allows to change the height of the illuminant by 3.5 cm, which ensures perfectly comfortable light. The lamp is completely glare-free and it was designed according to a reflecting three-shades system, which directs the biggest part of the light downwards. The top shade is made of copper with a white inside shade, which ensures downwards directed light. Both opal glass shades spread a bigger light spot, completely using the efficiency of the illuminant. The glass shades are shiny on the outside and matt on the inside. The light, directed downwards, is soft and comfortable. The copper is untreated, so that the lamp develops a unique patina along the years, depending on the place it hangs. If the glossy surface shall remain unchanging, it should be polished with a copper-polish substance with minimal grinding effect. A lamp that that gets its own personality – when it is switched on as well as off.
