Cappellini

Cappellini – furniture from Italy

The Italian furniture company was founded in Arosio in Italy in 1946. While the focus back then was on handcrafted furniture, Cappellini today mainly produces furniture designed by renowned designers.

The company's story began in an old warehouse in the south of Milan, which became a magnet for design pilgrims every year during the Milan Furniture Fair. There, Cappellini staged its new products as a colourful world and a window onto the future. When owner Giulio Cappellini systematically restructured the company into a "design publisher" in the 1970s, he always showed a sure instinct for young international design talent. Cappellini often even became a springboard for design newcomers, and so the list of Cappellini designers today reads like an international who's who of design.

From Jasper Morrison's Thinking Man's Chair (1988), Marc Newson's Orgone table (1991) and Embryo Chair (1988), and Tom Dixon's S-Chair, Pylon Chair and Bird lounger (1992) to Marcel Wanders' Knotted Chair (1996), the Cappellini furniture range brings together true design classics, some of which are also in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York in the USA. Other design stars who have worked for Cappellini include Konstantin Grcic, Alessandro Mendini, Alberto Meda, Ross Lovegrove, Ron Arad, Piero Lissoni, Werner Aisslinger and the brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

The entire Cappellini furniture collection is defined by strong individual statements and is therefore very diverse. Alongside exclusive cult pieces for the home, Cappellini also offers practical design: simple, functional and consistently successful storage and shelving systems by Giulio Cappellini.

The furniture, often technically demanding to produce, is made within a network of companies that ensures a high level of technical expertise. Nevertheless, this bold production policy came at a price, and since 2004 Cappellini has been part of the renowned Poltrona Frau Group.
