Marc Newson

Marc Newson was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1963. After completing his art degree in sculpture and jewellery at the College of the Arts in Sydney in 1984, he moved to Tokyo in Japan. There, until 1991, he designed objects for the Japanese entrepreneur Teruo Kurosaki and his company Idée, such as the Orgone Lounge, Black Hole Table and Felt Chair, which made him known in both Asia and Europe.

In 1991, he founded his own studio in Paris in France, called Pod, which merged with the Swiss watchmaker Ike in 1994 to form "Ikepod". Alongside watches, Newson also designed limited editions of various aluminium furniture pieces there, such as the Event Horizon Table and the Orgone Chair.

Especially during the 1990s, Marc Newson became an influential and highly regarded designer. Not least through his collaboration with renowned manufacturers such as Cappellini, Flos and Moroso, he became internationally known. He also designed many interiors for restaurants (including Coast in London, UK, Mash & Air in Manchester, UK, Osman in Cologne, Germany, and Canteen in Manhattan, New York, USA) and shops (including Pod Bar in Tokyo and Crocodile Boutique in Hong Kong), as well as for the Syn recording studio in Tokyo, to name just a few.

In 1997, the cosmopolitan designer moved to London, where he founded Marc Newson Ltd. together with Benjamin de Haan.
