Christien Meindertsma researches the „life“ of products and raw, original materials with her designs. For her first book Checked Baggage, the designer purchased a container full of objects by auction, which were confiscated in one week at the Schiphol airport after the attempts of the 11th September.
Christien’s second book PIG 05049 is a collection of photos and products that have all been made of single pieces of a pig. This is how Christien Meindertsma revealed the connection between the “raw material” pig and the consumer, who mainly doesn’t know what his consumer goods consist of in a globalized world.
These reflecting, journalistic approaches are also mirrored in the Christien Meinderstma designs. The designer connects original, nearly old-fashioned materials with modern interpretations of form and function. Thereby she creates humorous designs that will make the viewer think a little if he looks twice.
