Jan Kaplicky was born in Prague in 1937. In the Czech capital he graduated in architecture. After several works with renowned designers, he founded the office Future Systems in London in 1979. There he started cooperating with Amanda Levete as partner in 1989.
The projects of Future Systems are considered to be “high-tech”-architecture, innovative and aesthetically effective. Most of the times they are inspired by nature and its mechanisms and technologies. Some of the most famous projects of Future Systems are the Medicine Centre at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London as well as the Selfridges Building in Birmingham.
The 1972 in Milan born designer Andrea Morgante starts to cooperate with Future Systems in 2001. He designed the lamp Flora for FontanaArte together with Jan Kaplicky. The Czech-British designer Kaplicky passed away in Prague in 2009.
