Peter Maly studied Interior Design at the Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) in Detmold. In the 1960s he led the Interior Design team of the German magazine “Schöner Wohnen” (Beautiful Living). Since 1970 he has run his own Design Studio in Hamburg.
His furniture designs are produced by Europe’s leading manufacturers and sold worldwide. Characteristic of his work is his love of primary geometric shapes. Peter Maly pursues the ideal of simplicity; his designs are marked by their great clarity, functionality and longevity. He is viewed as one of Europe’s leading furniture designers and has received many awards for his work.
”My work is embossed by the continuous search for an expressive form, which shouldn’t fight to get in the foreground, but still being as independent as possible (I live in Hamburg and understatement has always been an hanseatic virtue, which I also value in design).
Moreover it is my aim to transform my designs into longevity products – they are contra-productive contrasting the intensifying consume carousel. This is also the ecologic face, since things that one likes to have around aren’t going to end up in the dustbin but remain alive and useful.
My receipt against fast apparent passage trends are clear, geometric embossed forms. They are logical to be explained and explicate in their shape.
They are realized in functional products by me, and often with contrastive noble materials.” Peter Maly
