It was love that led Dirk Wynants, interior architect and son of a furniture carpenter, out of the Kempen region, to the other end of Belgium. It was his passion for design that made him create Extremis in Gijverinkhove in the middle of the Westhoek region: A furniture series that is so much more than that. Extremis is a brand with a vision. A brand with a mission. A brand that has innovation preprogrammed in its genes. Since 1994 …
”Don’t design what is not necessary and functional. And if it comes to this, then do not hesitate to make it beautiful.” This quote from the ancient Shaker community expresses exactly what Extremis does. Extremis does not try to bring pretty outdoor furniture to the market. Extremis manufactures “devices” that improve life. More pleasant. These tools must always be functional. And especially: always better than what was there before. Therefore, no design comes to be simply by chance.
Extremis has the mission of connecting intelligent design based on healthy Flemish people’s sense with our Burgundy lifestyle. The medium? A complete assortment of exceptional furniture with special functions and timeless design. The result? More than a furniture series: a life style that brings people together.
That allows them to enjoy life together. The main phrase “Tools for togetherness” (or Tu’g vo thope te zi’n, to express it in the local dialect) is also another one that did not simply appear by chance. The first mind-child of Extremis founder Dirk Wynants was the multifunctional garden table Gargantua, now a design classic.
In less than five years, Extremis has captured a place on the international design market. The Extempore series made sure to pave the way for the later commonly used combination of wood and aluminium. Even though outdoor furniture is a niche in which Extremis does excellently, different designs such as Picnik and Cosmos quickly found into the company as well. From the outset, Extremis has devoted much attention to exports. Today, it accounts for 78% of its total turnover. Extremis is popular, especially in neighbouring countries, but also the United States and the Middle East.
