A protecting rooftop
90 euros are enough for two tarpaulins, 50 meters of rope and four sleeping mats as emergency accommodation for a family.
Many people lose their whole possessions during big catastrophes. That’s the reason why helping items like tents, tarpaulins, sleeping mats, cooking dishes and covers are distributed as fast as possible. Families that have lost their houses or whose houses have partly been destroyed will have a place to stay for a while in such cases.
”In first instance we calculate the damages and the needs. Then we instantly coordinate our possibilities with the local administration, people in need, aid organisations and other helping groups in order to start helping effectively with a plan. As far as possible, we buy the most needed things – mostly tent tarpaulins, covers, water and food – locally of course, to keep the economy there moving”, explains Jürgen Mika, emergency helper of the Welthungerhilfe.
For example, one family in Laos has the chance of ensuring itself additional income by having an own pig with 30 euros.
- The basics of a reconstruction of towns and long term aid are already placed during the emergency help directly after the catastrophe occurred.
- We were able to distribute 8,200 tents and plastic tarpaulins immediately in Haiti.
- 25,000 families received tarpaulins for an emergency home or to cover their houses shortly after the catastrophe.
