A boost of vitamins
Two vegetable patches can be tilled in the school garden with healthy and nutritional vegetables in it for only 150 euros.
Children will avoid the long way to school when they hardly eat at home. And the less the families eat, the more they need their children on the fields and at home. So they can hardly think of letting their children go to school.
In the north of Burundis for example, the Welthungerhilfe established school kitchens and gardens for roundabout 100,000 children of 100 schools. Carrots, beans, bananas and Lenga-Lenga – an African spinach – grow there. The children get a warm meal out of corn and vegetables there every day, which doesn’t only satisfy their hunger, but also serves for much more than that. The children eat healthier and the rate of children visiting school is higher, especially the rate of girls.
”We don’t have enough food at home. My children eat something warm and healthy at school once a day and my husband and I are able to work in the meantime. This helps us all”, explained Jocelyne Nyabenda in Burundi.
- Hunger is the violation of the human right of getting nutrition.
- Nearly one billion of people go to sleep suffering from hunger.
- The Welthungerhilfe fights the problem at its roots: helping people on the country.
