Since 1964, the Kastehelmi collection by Oiva Toikka stands for excellence in Scandinavian glass design. The series was not produced anymore after 1988, but thanks to Iittala, the Kastehelmi collection is now available again.
The Finnish ‘dewdrop’ name refers to the circles of bubbles in the pressed glass of the votive. The Kastehelmi glass products by Oiva Toikka have the characteristical dewdrop at the outside . Because of this embossment, the Kastehelmi plates, bowls, hand lantern et cetera are easy to grab and hold, and additionally, just look amazing.
The non-reversible Kastehelmi-Design was developed rather accidentally: In the 60s, Oiva Toikka tried to find a suitable method to hide the weld on pressed glas. This way he got the idea to place little glass drops on top of the welds. His experiment developed to a total new and innovative design that was reissued by Iittala.
