The Design award of the Federal Republic of Germany is the highest official German award regarding design. The award is given since 1969 annually by the Federal Minister for Economy and Technology. The "Award of the awards" was celebrated in Berlin on the 12th of September.
The foundation of the Design award of the Federal Republic of Germany should emphasize the importance of design in economy and encourage it regarding middle-class-political points of view.
High class jury
A high class jury under the direction of Anne Ruth Herkes and with prominent members, such as Wolfgang Joop, qualifies up to five excellent performances accordingly out of the branches of product design and communication design every year. It is possible to present creations out of product design (serial productions of all branches), communication design performances for analogue and digital media as well as 3D and live communication, which have already been awarded on a juror-based selection or in an international competition before.
The creations and performances should be special considering the following points: utility, design quality, ergonomics, durability or acceptance, technical and formal independence, design quality of the product’s equipment, environment-relation, visualization of value or emotional component, environment-friendliness and sustainability, reliability, safety and accessibility for disabled persons.
The award of the awards
Only five products won the Design award of the Federal Republic of Germany in the category product design, which is why the design award is rightly considered to be the “Award of the awards” in Germany. There is also one product among the awarded, offered by Connox: The open form of the Ed Mobile File Cabinet doesn’t ask for determinate functions, but it is usable for many different purposes: Ed is suitable as flexible deposit for mobile devices, such as notebooks or tablets, as side table with storage room, or also as spontaneous seat possibility for visitors in the office.
