The Steelwood Chair from Magis and the designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec was awarded with the desired Compasso d’Oro. The internationally renowned design award is given to the most exceptional and valuable Italian design products every three years.
Steelwood from Magis is an elegant chair with a classic silhouette that connects two traditional materials: wood and steel. At the same time the Steelwood Chair is a high-tech chair because the steel backrest needs nine working steps to reach its desired look and functional qualities.
The awarding of the Compasso d’Oro took place the 12th of July in the museum of contemporaneous art in Rome, where the prized products are now exposed until the 25th of September 2011 in the exposition “Uniqueness of Italy”. The awarded products are introduced in the historical collection of the Compasso d’Oro afterwards.
The Compasso d’Oro (The golden compass) is the first design award to be given in Europe and originated out of an idea from Gio Pontis from 1954. The award essentially encourages the industrial production of Italy for the world and to offer a characteristic embossing to it. Designer, industrials and researchers whose connection of technical and cultural aspects in production are best, are awarded since then triennially.
