Furniture, illumination, glass, industrial design, jewellery and fashion - "Nordic Design Today" presents works by five contemporaneous Nordic designers, which were honoured with one of the most important design awards: The Torsten-und-Wanja-Söderberg-Award.
The Torsten-und-Wanja-Söderberg-Award, endowed with one million Swedish krona (roundabout 115.000 Euros) is given once a year to honour “creative and exceptional creation in arts, design and fashion in the north” since 1994. The exposition presents the awarded of the last years Sigurd Bonger (Norway), Henrik Vibskov (Denmark), Front (Sweden), Harri Koskinen (Finland) and Steinunn Sigurðardóttir (Iceland).
Nordic design celebrates international success since more than a half century now – the time to question traditions and to develop new ideas and visions is ripe. The five designers which are presented in Berlin, concentrate on new techniques without any prejudice, especially focussing digital technology. Therewith they succeed in creating surprising results that often represent the contemporaneous Nordic shapes with their playful avant-garde approach.
The designers are inspired by nature and tradition of their hometowns, by folklore and regional crafts, while they also keep in mind the international market. They expand the design concept by means of combining Nordic functionalism and clear aesthetic forms with new materials, working methods and milieus – and they continue the success history of Nordic design.
The exposition Nordic Design Today can be visited until the 2nd September 2013 in the Nordic embassies in Berlin.
