A Japanese fashion designer and a Finnish traditional manufacturer - a collaboration like that is unusual. And it resulted in unusual designs, unique designs with the potential to write design history. Two basic styles meet in the Japanese Finnish collection.

Pleating technique from Japan

The characteristic feature of Miyake's fashion are the colourful silk fabrics, lightweight polyester materials and handcrafted details. The fashion designer is characterised by experiments and innovations in the fields of fabric development, processing and recycling. Since the 1980s, the use of pleats in any way is among his greatest hobbies. Pleating applications, dresses made of only one piece of fabric or composed of many individual parts - Miyake creates the unusual .Iittala X Issey Miyake - Interior textile

The origin of all these designs is the Issey Miyake Design Studio , Miyake founded in 1970 - with the effort to bring art, fashion and technology in harmony. Technology and textile research, next to traditional artistic techniques, play a big role since the start. His innovations in the field of pleating techniques make him worldwide the master of the pleats. Like hardly anyone, he and his designers of the Issey Miyake Design Studio create simply cut models from wrinkle-free, stretchable and feathery light polyester plissés that appear like sculptures.

Purist design from Finland

Iittala X Issey Miyake - Collection 2016 For more than a century, Iittala is worldwide known for clear, natural forms. The traditional company is one of the pioneers of popular Scandinavian design that omits everything superfluous and prefers clear, functional and elegant shapes. Each product by Iittala can withstand two central principles: good design needs to tolerate the everyday use. And: it has to be able to outlast short-term trends and tastes. Thus the Finnish manufacturer is the defender of timeless design - mainly for accessories and utensils for the kitchen, decoration and home textiles. Many of the first designs are still produced today. A deeper meaning, a special function or unique materials make Iittala products to something special.

Japanese Finnish teamwork

The Iittala X Issey Miyake Collection is the result of a close collaboration between the Iittala concept and design team and the Miyake Design Studio. Throughout the entire development process, both teams placed greatest emphasis on natural, handmade, minimalist design and the use of new technologies in their work. "Our expertise in the processing of fabrics pays off in this joint project. The latest technologies were used for the textile products to shape the materials in pleats. But a part is also manufactured in fine hand work. The pentagon, which is found in many parts of the collection, represents an unusual element. With it, we hope to have created a special moment in everyday life" says Midori Kitamura, head of the Miyake Design Studio.

The collection Iittala X Issey Miyake

Different industries, different styles, one key thing in common: the tendency to timeless designs. That's what makes the Iittala X Issey Miyake collection this special. The table mats, pillowcases and bags own the typical Nordic simple form - reduced and functional. Their pleats are their only jewelry. To place the fabrics perfectly in pleats, the original pleating technique by Issey Miyakehas been applied, proven since the late 1980s. The resulting special pleats allow bags and napkins to be easily folded and unfolded. Also the material - a high-quality polyester fabric - is Miyake's work.

Asian influences meet on natural forms in the napkins and tablecloths in the form of roses: the accessories reminiscent of origami, the art of paper folding. Delicate pastel tones enhance the harmony feeling that convey the artistic designs.

The Iittala X Issey Miyake plate in pentagon format have a puristic appearance and natural form distinguished by - no hard edges, no patterns, no structure. Only by the uneven long and soft edges, the dishes get their natural, harmonious look - influenced by Asian culture.
