The philosophy of the Kyouei chief designer Kouichi Okamoto is “simple design with simple ideas.”
“That’s just ingenious, I should have had this idea myself” – that’s probably the first thing that comes to one’s mind when looking at the designs by the Japanese design newcomer.
For example, Kouichi Okamoto designed a lamp for Kyouei, which consists of a rubber balloon and an LED lamp. In principle, the balloon lamp is a very simple idea and yet it radiates a very pleasant light.
The CV of Kouichi Okamoto is just as curious as his designs. He is an entirely self-taught designer and never went to a design school. Kouichi Okamoto was a successful DJ for a long time before becoming the CEO and chief designer at Kyouei Design. Many of his designs are created together with his wife Ayako Nakanishi.
The simple and beautiful objects have found great favour at design exhibitions like the New York ICFF or the 100% Design in Tokyo.
