Finnish Fashion Designer
Vuokko Hillevi Lilian Eskolin-Nurmesniemi is a famous fashion designer from Finland, who had great influence on the fashion of the 60s and 70s. She studied at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki and joined the company Marimekko in 1953, for which she designed revolutionary designs together with Maija Isola. The two were largely responsible for the success of Marimekko and made the company popular. Vuokko managed the breakthrough with the Jokapoika shirt - a red shirt with vertical white stripes. This pattern can be found in many designs and is to this day popular on countless textiles. Simple shapes and straight patterns always make up their designs and embody the minimalist, Scandinavian style.
Amongst others she was awarded the Lunning Prize in 1964 and the Kaj Franck Design prize in 1997.
