Norwegian blankets and pillows in wool

Norwegian wool, 100% Norwegian production and close cooperation with Scandinavia's leading designers and textile artists have made blankets from Røros Tweed have become one of the most respected pure Norwegian quality products.

Røros Tweed is located 600 m.o.h. in Røros, Norway. An unlikely location for a textile factory, many may think - but it has its history. Peder Hiort, who was director of Røros Kobberverk in the 1 8. century, bequeathed his entire fortune to the poor in Røros. Hiort's will has been described as one of the wisest donations in the Nordic countries.

According to the will, wool and linen were to be purchased for distribution to the poor. From this they were to spin, knit and weave for the production of socks, cotton wool and warm clothing - textiles that were necessary in the cold mountain climate of Røros. The products were collected and wages paid for the work. Every year in Sankthan's time, these textile products were distributed along with other gifts to those in need. Many who were first paid for the work received the products back as a gift.

The establishment of Røros Tweed was a continuation of the handicraft activities of the Hiorts Foundation. It began with a weaving course in 1938/3 9. Textiles were woven in private homes, as the Hiorts Foundation had done for 150 years, and a sales centre was established. Investment was made in machinery and gradually there was a move to more factory production. The need for larger premises arose and a new factory was completed in 1952.

Over the years Røros Tweed experimented with Norwegian wool and the development of high quality textile products and designs. The factory has worked with leading Norwegian textile artists for many years. Røros Tweed is known for its curtains, upholstery fabrics, carpets and tweed.

Today it has Røros Tweed reorganized its production to meet the challenges of the modern textile industry. The factory's production now focuses on high quality 100% pure new wool blankets with designs inspired by the aesthetic and cultural heritage of Røros - and the fascinating high mountain nature.
