The rugs factory Ruckstuhl in the Swiss Langenthal produces high-quality carpets out of natural fibre already since 1881. The family company has made a name for itself worldwide based on its exclusive textile flooring. Ruckstuhl rugs can be used in living rooms as well as public places and can be found in numerous in offices and conference rooms of well-known companies.

Ruckstuhl employs about 80 employees. Together, they transform “natural raw material into cultural values” in Langenthal. The material of the textiles has focal importance for the Ruckstuhl philosophy. The most important resource is the natural, regenerative animal or plant fibre. The range of materials is multifaceted and includes e.g. coconut, sisal, jute, cotton, paper yarn, linen, pure new wool as well as ross and goat hair.

Asked about the used materials, the company explains, ”Natural fibres ensure a pleasant room climate, bring warmth and comfort, and are long-lived; they age beautifully and ensure a trusting environment due to their nativeness and authenticity.

Moreover, natural fibre can be disposed of without any problems. Ruckstuhl’s natural fibre rugs feature a unique connection between function and aesthetic. Together, material, structure and colour offer a harmonic and coordinated appearance.

This way, they don’t just offer vivid surfaces and a wealth of colours, but also an overall timeless, understated design. On the functional side, the textiles are extremely resistant and long-lived. The production takes place on heavy looms to ensure the dense structure and high weight of every single rug.

Moreover only first-class yarns are used – those used for weaving and tufting procedures. The Ruckstuhl company was founded in 1881. It was established by Moritz Ruckstuhl, who focussed on working with natural materials for high-quality floorings. The initial production of coconut mats was complemented by paper yarns during war time.

Later on, further materials such as wool or sisal yarn were added. In the 1970s, traditional weaving was replaced by tufting, constituting an extension of the range of materials available, so that products made out of pure new wool make up the larger part of the assortment today. In 1985, Peter Ruckstuhl became the manager of the company in the fourth generation. Nowadays, Ruckstuhl is an internationally recognised company that has significantly increased its exports in the past few decades.

Moreover, Ruckstuhl has showrooms in Milan, Paris and New York. The main assortment of Ruckstuhl consists of rugs, which are divided into five collections. The division is easily made from the five most important resources:

coconut, sisal, wool, linen, wood. In addition, there is the collection “plus”, which includes the creations of external designers. Ruckstuhl is now concentrating on another product field. Due to increased usage of hard floors, acoustic problems in public spaces, offices and living rooms have emerged in recent years. Together with the internationally renowned architect and designer Matteo Thun and the acoustics exper Dr. Christian Nocke, Ruckstuhl searched for solutions that fulfil the demands of room acoustics and product design equally. The result of these efforts was the Panello collection that was launched in 2007.
