Eames Chair: timeless & with many combination possibilities

The Eames Chairs by Vitra

The durability of the products is a top priority for Vitra. Material and design are made to last for decades. The designers Charles & Ray Eames were guided by this idea.

The Plywood group LCW and LCM chairs were some of Charles Eames' first designs. The Plywood Chair is based on the idea of rigid materials such as layered wood adapting to the contours of the human body. The Plywood Group LCM Chair by Vitra was presented in the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946 for the first time. More designs followed: The La Chaise and the Eames Plastic Chairs. The first RAR rocking chair and the Eames plastic armchair came first, then further variants like the Eames Plastic Side Chair DSW. Moreover, the world-famous designers created the Aluminium Chair of the Vitra Aluminium group, as well as the famous Eames Lounge Chair with Ottoman. Classics of design history emerged by the designers Charles & Ray Eames.

The Eames Plastic Chairs through the Course of Time

The Eames Plastic Chairs can look back on a long development. The original was made of fibreglass. Plastics of today’s quality didn’t exist at that time. The manufacturer Vitra began to use polyamide for the seat by the end of the 1990s. Although the original appearance of the material with visible glass fibres on the surface was gone, the chair were considerably cheaper. Today, Vitra uses polypropylene. Herman Miller, who, as well as Vitra, owns a manufacturing license for the Eames chairs, has reintroduced a series of original Eames moulded fibreglass chairs on the market in 2014.

Again and again, Vitra brings new versions of the Eames chairs on the market. The Eames Plastic Side Chair DSW appeared in new colours and new seat heights in 2015. In the winter of 2015, a Black Collection emerged with the classics in dark, single colours.

So far, the Eames plastic chair has convinced with its timeless and extremely functional silhouette for 65 years. The different seats can be individually combined with or without armrests, with a selection of different bases. No matter whether in the living room, in lounges, cafés and canteens — the Eames plastic chairs are absolute all-rounders.
