Linoleum is a natural, hard-wearing material that is used not only for flooring but also for furniture. Its pleasantly matt surface is particularly popular for table and desk tops. To keep linoleum looking good for a long time, it comes down to the right use and care.
What is linoleum?
Linoleum is made mainly from natural raw materials such as linseed oil, resins, wood or cork flour and jute. The material is robust, durable and available in many different colours.
On furniture, a thin layer of linoleum is usually applied to a base of MDF or plywood. The surface feels pleasantly warm and soft and is also suitable for everyday use.
Linoleum also has antistatic properties, so dust is less likely to cling to the surface. Small signs of wear can become less visible over time. Even so, avoid using sharp objects directly on the surface, as they can leave scratches.
What should you look out for with linoleum?
To keep a linoleum table top looking good for as long as possible, protect it from strong heat and prolonged moisture. It's best to put hot pans, saucepans and tealights on a trivet or coaster.
Wipe up spilt liquids such as coffee, tea or red wine as quickly as possible. This prevents discolouration and stains.
Also avoid harsh, alkaline or abrasive cleaning products. They can attack the surface and damage it in the long term.
How do you clean linoleum?
For everyday cleaning, a soft, slightly damp cloth is usually enough. If necessary, you can also use a pH-neutral cleaner or one specially suited to linoleum. Then wipe the surface dry with a clean cloth.
Treat stubborn stains as gently as possible and always follow the manufacturer's care instructions. Avoid scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Tips for caring for linoleum
A few simple habits will protect the surface in everyday use:
- Wipe up coffee, tea, red wine and other liquids as quickly as possible.
- Use coasters for hot items, vases, plant pots and other accessories.
- Don't cut directly on a linoleum table top.
- Clean the surface with a soft cloth and a suitable pH-neutral cleaner.
- Avoid abrasive products, harsh cleaners and very wet cleaning.
- For special care products, always follow the furniture manufacturer's recommendations.
This way, the characteristic matt surface is preserved and you'll enjoy your linoleum furniture for a long time.
