How to find the right posters for your home

[[[YT_MEDIA|259371||]]]
  1. Combining motifs
  2. Size and frames
  3. Hanging wall art
  4. The right paper
  5. Summary – what to consider

1. Combining poster motifs

One theme

Posters from the same theme are easy to combine. Sizes, colours and motifs can vary, but the overall look remains cohesive. A personalised poster wall can reflect your taste, preferences or interests. For example, combine colourful photo posters with black-and-white motifs, as in the example below.

1. artvoll - Surfboard poster | 2. artvoll - Blue Seashell poster | 3. Paper Collective - Girls poster | 4. artvoll - Palm Tree No. 3 poster

One colour palette

If you stick to one colour family, anything goes: colourful creations add splashes of colour and become an eye-catcher on a white wall.

1. Paper Collective - Solid Shapes poster | 2. artvoll - Leaf Abstraction 01 poster | 3. artvoll - Mothernature 01 poster | 4. Paper Collective - Full of Love

Always take your existing interior into account. Pick up the colour palette or interior style of the room, or use a poster as a deliberate contrast to create a break in style.

1. artvoll - Circles No. 1 | 2. artvoll - Shapes No. 1 Grass | 3. Paper Collective - Nature 1:1 Pine Cone (green) | 4. artvoll - Foggy Forest poster

Mix & match

Busy motifs with lots of colours are best combined with minimalist motifs, typography posters or graphic designs.

1. Paper Collective - Into The Blue 01 | 2. artvoll - Salt Flat | 3. Paper Collective - Basketball Cities | 4. artvoll - One Line Face poster | 5. Paper Collective - Los Angeles is Pink 01 | 6. artvoll - Ciao poster

"As a rule of thumb, the more detailed or intricate a motif is, the larger the format should be. Viewing distance also matters – can you stand right in front of it, or is there a piece of furniture in front of it?" – Viktoria, interior expert

2. The right size and frame

The size of a poster often depends on where you want to hang it and how much wall space you have. Common poster formats are 30 x 40 cm, 40 x 50 cm, 50 x 70 cm and 60 x 90 cm.

Tip: "When creating a poster wall, it's not just your choice of motifs and frames that adds interest – using the occasional mount makes it even more striking." – Viktoria, interior expert

1. Paper Collective - The Swimmer 01 | 2. Paper Collective - The Swimmer 02, 50 x 70 cm, Moebe - Poster Hanger | 3. Paper Collective - picture frame | 4. Paper Collective - The Swimmer 01

Choose between a poster on its own, a subtle hanger or a classic picture frame that puts the motif artfully in focus. Bear in mind that if you use a mount, for example, you'll need a correspondingly larger frame. Some prints by artvoll or Kay Bojesen are also available ready-framed.

3. Hanging wall art properly

There are countless ways to create your own personal poster wall. Find out in our guide how to arrange and align different poster and frame sizes.

4. The right paper

Types of paper for wall art

Cotton paper is particularly hard-wearing and is ideal for printing and embossing. It's used not only for designer posters but also for euro banknotes.

Posters made of recycled paper are also high quality and very tear-resistant thanks to the addition of new fibres. They are also kinder to the environment.

Munken has a texture that gives it a more refined look. This uncoated paper has a natural feel and is mostly used for art prints.

Transparent films, such as those by the manufacturer Moebe, are a little more unconventional. On film, printed photographs take on a distinctive multidimensional look that printed products rarely achieve.

Paper weight

Designer posters stand out partly because of the high-quality paper they are printed on. The higher the paper weight, the thicker and more robust the poster. For comparison, standard printer paper weighs 80 gsm and good printer paper 120 gsm.

Glossy or matt paper

Matt paper causes less glare than glossy paper. It generally looks more natural and is largely resistant to fingerprints and grease marks.

Coated or uncoated paper

The coating makes the paper smoother and more stable, and it absorbs less ink. It also allows a finer print screen than uncoated paper, which makes the print more detailed and intense.

If you want to enjoy your posters for as long as possible, don't hang them in direct sunlight unless you're sure the print is UV-resistant.

Particularly practical: paper wall posters can easily be taken down and stored rolled up – this avoids unsightly creases or tears, and you can swap and reuse your posters at any time.

Summary – what to look for when buying posters

  • Different pictures from the same theme or colour range look cohesive together.
  • Combine busy motifs with minimalist or typographic posters.
  • The size of the poster depends on the space available. If you use a mount, make sure you choose a correspondingly larger frame.
  • Matt paper is less shiny and stays largely free of fingerprints.
  • With coated paper, the print is more detailed and intense.
  • If you want to hang your poster in direct sunlight, look for a UV-resistant print.
