Engineering and innovative design

höfats is more than a classic design or engineering office. Founded in 2014 by the qualified engineers Thomas Kaiser and Christian Wassermann, the design company from the Allgäu region in Germany works right at the intersection of design and engineering – and therefore stands for holistic product development. The close interplay between design and engineering holds considerable potential. As developers working in both fields, Kaiser and Wassermann combine product design, corporate design, engineering, prototyping and series production.

The two engineers specialise in grills of all kinds and their accessories. All products are defined by high-quality materials and long-lasting quality. This high standard has paid off: in 2015, höfats won the Red Dot Design Award for the Cone grill. höfats has also received the Focus Open 2015 design award, the Design Plus Award 2016, the German Design Award 2017 and the iF Design Award 2016.

The company is named after a mountain in the Allgäu, near Oberstdorf. The Höfats is an unusual mountain. Neither easy nor safe to climb from any side, it was once both famous and notorious. Although the mountain is now barely known beyond the Allgäu, locals recognise it by its shape alone. The Höfats is not a mountain of superlatives, but one with character – and climbing it calls for a high degree of self-awareness and responsibility.

Christian Wassermann and Thomas Kaiser's role model is Otl Aicher, one of Germany's most influential designers. In 1972, Aicher moved to Rotis in the Allgäu, very close to höfats' current production site in Unterthingau. He named one of his typeface series höfats, as he too was fascinated by this charismatic mountain.
