In 1951, trained textile designer Armi Ratia founded one of the world's leading fashion and textile companies: Marimekko. This makes her one of the first female entrepreneurs of her time.
After working as a copywriter, among other things, and supporting her husband Viljo Ratia in the day-to-day business of Printex Oy, she founded the textile company Marimekko, whose launch was celebrated with a (now legendary) fashion show.
The Marimekko philosophy
The Marimekko philosophy is based on three lines that Ratia wrote at the age of 14 and that have lost none of their power over time:
"There is only one duty: beauty.
There is only one reality: the dream.
There is only one power: love."
Under Armi Ratia's leadership, Marimekko became a leading manufacturer of innovative textiles for fashion and the home. She brought in designers who could illustrate her philosophy of beauty in everyday life and bring it out in a special way.
