"Don't make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful don't hesitate to make it beautiful."
Founded in 1992, Design House Stockholm is one of the leading producers of contemporary Scandinavian design products that make everyday life a little more beautiful and a little easier. From tableware and lighting to furniture and textiles, the company develops functional, timeless design products.
Founder Anders Färdig's intention was to set up a kind of publishing house for distinctive Scandinavian design and for original, innovative ideas. The success of this idea shows in the wide choice of timeless, playful and stylish objects that make up Design House Stockholm's range today.
The collaboration with independent designers also resembles a publishing house, with designers working much like authors. As a result, Design House Stockholm is able to attract many well-known designers as well as newcomers to expand its collection. The products are developed independently by the designers, while Design House Stockholm focuses on putting together a cohesive range. Only products with character and personality make it into the collection.
The label's aim is to represent the best of modern Scandinavian design. "Scandinavian" is not limited to a region but is understood as an aesthetic and craft-based design tradition. That is why the company's network also includes international designers from France, Germany, Australia, the USA and Chile. Among Design House Stockholm's best-known objects are the Block Lamp by Harri Koskinen (1996), which has made it into the collection of MoMA in New York in the USA, and the Cord Lamp floor lamp by the design team Form Us With Love, which appears to stand on its own cable.
