HAY design – furniture and accessories from Denmark
The Danish design brand HAY was founded in 2002 and made its public debut at IMM Cologne in 2003. This means the company from Horsens in Denmark has a relatively short history – especially compared with some legendary Danish competitors.
You might assume that the designers around founder Rolf Hay would take a particularly subversive view of classic Scandinavian design. Not so. Instead, the aim is to revive the Danish furniture design of the 1950s and 1960s – because it was in exactly this period, known as Danish Modern, that Denmark established itself as a leading design nation.
Rather than simply copying the old masters, HAY wants to develop classic design further in a modern, contemporary context. It pursues this goal in collaboration with young, up-and-coming and well-known international designers – with success from its very first years.
Successful collaborations created distinctive HAY furniture
HAY's collaboration with designers sets an example: the Copenhague collection, for instance, was created in close cooperation with Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec to furnish the University of Copenhagen with new furniture that is both functional and attractive. Together with designer Sebastian Wrong, HAY launched an entire sub-brand called Wrong for HAY, which was first presented to the public at the London Design Festival in 2013.
Another hallmark of HAY design is the breadth of its products: the HAY range is remarkably diverse. Alongside furniture such as the now iconic About A Chair and complete sofa systems, you'll also find plenty of everyday items such as bed linen, glassware, office accessories and decorative pieces.
