Javier Mariscal was born in Valencia in Spain in 1950. Ever since he first picked up a pencil to earn a living in the 1970s, his life and career have been shaped by his inexhaustible creativity and his urge to express himself across different disciplines. Furniture design, painting, sculpture, illustration, interior design, graphic design, landscape painting and garden design have become his profession and his life.
In his designs, Mariscal always expresses himself through a personal formal language that is complex in content but simple in message – innocent and provocative at the same time. He designed both Cobi, the mascot for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and Twipsy, the mascot for Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany. In his own words, his work is equally influenced by "Calder and Vázquez, Miró and Mickey Mouse, Matisse and Crumb". Even as a student, Mariscal drew underground comics and made a name for himself as a talented free spirit.
Since 1989, Javier Mariscal has worked in his own studio, Estudio Mariscal, in a former tannery in the Palo Alto complex in Barcelona. There he designs furniture for renowned manufacturers such as Magis, Moroso and Amat-3, porcelain for Rosenthal and illustrations for various magazines. Well-known works include his Dúplex bar stool (1980), the Alessandra armchair for Moroso (1995) and the Domine table lamp for Santa & Cole (2002).
