Affectionate, modern design
Kay Bojesen was a Danish designer. He was born on 15 August 1886 in Copenhagen in Denmark, where he died on 28 August 1958. His likeable, warm-hearted designs secured him a place in design history. With his practical, modern design language, he is regarded as one of the great Danish functionalists. He became known above all for his wooden animals, which are now produced by Rosendahl and are undisputed classics.
He began his career, however, with an apprenticeship as a silversmith at Georg Jensen. It was only in the 1930s that Bojesen discovered his passion for wood. In 1930, he opened a shop with an adjoining studio at Bredgade 47 in Copenhagen, where he created and sold his designs over the following decades.
Warm, lively and made of wood
Kay Bojesen designed his popular wooden animals until 1957. They occupy a special space between imaginary figure and design object. The animals follow Bojesen's mantra that good design should be human, warm and alive: "They should remind you of a circus," was how he usually described his works – and the charming wooden figures are among the best loved of them.
In Kay Bojesen's naive designs, form and object, seriousness and play merge into one. At the same time, Bojesen had a rare ability to bring wood to life, which has made his works international design icons. In 2008, Wallpaper magazine even described Kay Bojesen's wooden monkey as the epitome of Danish design.
Kay Bojesen died at the age of 72. Today, his products are made by Rosendahl in close collaboration with the Bojesen family.
