Marimekko Siirtolapuutarha – an expressive tableware collection

Siirtolapuutarha is the Finnish name of one of Marimekko's best-known series. It includes a range of expressive pieces for the kitchen and dining table. The Finnish word roughly means "allotment garden" and describes the different stages of designer Maija Louekari's journey from the busy city centre to an allotment area full of colourful flowers and vegetables.

The name Siirtolapuutarha also reflects the colourful mix of products in the series: bowls, teapots, plates, mugs and cups form a large whole, yet each piece retains its own character.

The Marimekko Siirtolapuutarha products also have a mixed background: the pattern comes from Maija Louekari, while Sami Ruotsalainen designed the simple, clean form of the tableware collection called Oiva.

The ideal base for Marimekko Siirtolapuutarha

In 2009, Sami Ruotsalainen was given the honour of creating a universal base for Marimekko's famous patterns. The result was the Oiva tableware, the heart of the Siirtolapuutarha collection. The timeless Oiva series stands out for its clear lines, which give it a modern touch and, above all, leave plenty of room for the patterns to shine.

The individual pieces from the Marimekko Siirtolapuutarha collection look especially good when you combine them. The interplay of the different characters with the Siirtolapuutarha pattern was important to Louekari and Ruotsalainen from the very start of the design process – and the series even owes its name to this colourful variety.
