Poltronova – Italian Radical Design and design history
Poltronova is an Italian design manufacturer founded by Sergio Cammilli in Tuscany, Italy, in 1957. Particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, the company became an important centre for experimental Italian furniture design and the Radical Design movement.
Ettore Sottsass and Poltronova
Ettore Sottsass played a formative role as Poltronova's art director from 1958 to 1973. The company also worked with designers and architects such as Gae Aulenti, Angelo Mangiarotti, Giovanni Michelucci and Paolo Portoghesi.
A centre of Radical Design
In the 1960s, Poltronova opened its doors to the young Florentine groups Archizoom Associati and Superstudio. Their experimental designs challenged traditional ideas about furniture, architecture and living. Models such as the Superonda sofa by Archizoom became important testimonies of this era.
Preserving design classics
In 2005, the Centro Studi Poltronova was founded. It is dedicated to preserving and documenting the historical archive and also reissues important designs from Poltronova's history. In this way, the brand's experimental heritage remains accessible today.
