Outstanding British design for everyday life
Sir Kenneth Grange, Design Director at Anglepoise since 2003, began his career as a technical illustrator during his national service. He went on to make a name for himself as a product designer and co-founded Pentagram with four partners – today an international design studio with offices in the USA, Germany and London in the UK.
Grange's remarkable body of work, spanning half a century, includes user-friendly, quintessentially British designs that have made everyday life easier for countless people. Sir Kenneth Grange designed not only products for household brands such as Kenwood, Parker, Kodak – and, of course, Anglepoise – but also the InterCity 125 train, Royal Mail's regional postboxes and London taxis.
Alongside numerous prizes, awards, distinctions and honorary titles, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1984 and knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013 for his outstanding services to British design.
