Stefan Diez was born in Freising in Germany in 1971. After training as a cabinetmaker and spending a year working for furniture companies in India, he began studying at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design in 1996. While studying industrial design, Diez was already working as an assistant to Richard Sapper and Konstantin Grcic.
In 2002, he founded his own design studio in Munich, Germany. There he works for renowned manufacturers such as Elmar Flötotto, Depot4Design and Wilkhahn, and his work has received numerous design awards (including the Design Report Award 2002, the Red Dot Award 2005 and the Federal Design Prize of Germany 2005).
Stefan Diez prefers a hands-on approach. His designs come about less at the drawing board and more through working directly on and with the material. From concept to production, he rarely hands over control, completing his work himself with almost perfectionist craftsmanship.
