Modular furniture of uncompromising quality

USM stands for modular living and working with uncompromising, innovative quality. USM modular furniture systems for contemporary living and working environments are made in Münsingen in Switzerland.

USM's origins go back to 1885, when Ulrich Schärer founded an ironmongery and metalworking business in the Hinterdorf area of Münsingen near Bern. In 1961, Paul Schärer Junior commissioned the architect Fritz Haller to design the new production and administration buildings.

Modular furniture systems with the patented USM ball joint

Working with Haller, the company also developed a modular furniture system for its office complex. What began as a modular architectural design for its own use soon became the company's core product. USM furniture is based on standardised components that can be used to build countless solutions.

The USM ball joint is the heart of the collection: a small sphere that acts as a flexible connector between the rigid steel tubes. The USM ball joint was patented in the mid-1960s and soon went into series production. USM's first major order was furnishing the Rothschild bank in Paris in France.

Long-lasting furniture classics

With modular furniture from USM, you can design rooms individually and to measure. The furniture can be adapted to your needs and tailored to any room, so your interior always suits your current situation. Respect for the environment is particularly important to USM. High-quality, durable materials and the great flexibility of the modular products make for an exceptionally long life cycle – and the longer a product can be used, the better it is for the environment.

"With the highest-quality materials, Swiss precision workmanship, adaptable functionality and timeless design, USM furniture is more than a contemporary solution – it is a forward-looking investment."

The modular systems can also be found in renowned museums such as MoMA in New York in the USA.
